Four Tuscan Jewels in a Day: Siena, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Pisa
Your day tour begins with a scenic drive south through the famed Tuscan countryside to Siena. The splendid medieval city is universally known for its artistic treasures, and has been recognized by the UNESCO as a "heritage of humanity" site. Once in Siena, you'll visit the famous Piazza del Campo, with its unusual shell shape. You'll see the Palazzo Comunale (the town hall, built in 1298) flanked by the tall Torre del Mangia (imposing tower, built in 1325). Every year the famous Palio takes place here – a costumed horse race in which the city's neighborhoods compete with unbridled passion. You'll have free time to visit the splendid Cathedral, one of the highest artistic expressions of the Middle Ages, as well as splendid buildings, churches, and shops along the narrow, lively streets.
From Siena, a brief panoramic drive northwest through the vineyards and olive groves will take you into the heart of the Chianti territory to the ancient fortified hamlet of Monteriggioni. This small jewel was built during the 13th century and is embraced by its still intact walls. Take a walk within the restricted perimeter of the surrounding walls with eleven towers, and discover a beautiful corner of Tuscany suspended in the Middle Ages.
A short distance away, on a pleasant country estate surrounded by sweet-smelling greenery, you will be served a lunch of traditional Chianti products. The friendly owner of the farmstead will guide you with passion and expertise in tasting the following palate pleasing wines and local delicacies:
- Vernaccia from San Gimignano DOCG
- Chianti DOCG, Chianti Classico DOCG
- Bartolomeo “Gold Medal” (Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, barrel-aged)
- Baldassarre “Super Tuscan” (Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, barrel-aged)
- Cavaliere “Super Tuscan” (Sangiovese, Merlot, barrel-aged)
- Vinsanto with Cantuccini (Tuscan biscuits)
- Extra Virgin Oil with Tuscan Bread combined with traditional Tuscan foods such as Tuscan cheese, Tuscan cold cuts, Bruschetta (bread with olive oil)
- Ribollita (traditional Tuscan vegetable soup)
- Lasagne (traditional Tuscan pasta with meat)
After lunch, your driver will take you about half an hour further to the northwest, to San Gimignano, another UNESCO world heritage site. San Gimignano is famous for the still intact medieval town construction with numerous (and beautiful) towers – hence the name "Manhattan of the Middle Ages." This town is also known for the Vernaccia wine, produced locally. Take a leisurely stroll through the town and discover the picturesque Piazza della Cisterna, the Dome, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Church of Sant' Agostino.
Sit back and relax as your driver takes you on the approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes long drive through the gorgeous Tuscan countryside, to Pisa. The sparkling sight of the Piazza dei Miracoli, another UNESCO world heritage, is waiting for you. The peerless white marble buildings rise out of the green lawn – the famous Leaning Tower, the magnificent Baptistery, the stunning Cathedral, and the Monumental Graveyard. All of these are prime expressions of Romanesque architecture of the 12th and 13th centuries, and house works of immense artistic value.
After your Pisa visit, your driver will take you back to Florence, which lies just over an hour's drive to the east.
